Central Oven + Shaker - Newcastle

Pizza in my opinion should have it's own food category and just like you are advised on eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, you should be advised to eat pizza at least once a week too.

After the Newcastle United game on Saturday (we beat Wigan 2-1 fyi) Matty and I headed out for supper as we were going to the Theatre Royal on Greys Street at half 7 to see Mamma Mia.

Situated right opposite Central station lies the (fairly) newly restaurant.

Matty and I ate here on Valentines day which is when I got given the Mamma Mia tickets, as we were shown to exactly the same table again Matty said it was a coincident as I hadn't booked this restaurant on purpose.

I really like the decor inside Central, it's kind of like diner style but with a modern twist.

As we'd been out all day we kicked off our meal with, well, wine of course.

As you'll probably know by now my wine needs to be served super dry so we went for sauvignon blanc.

Then we went for the cheesy garlic bread £4.50.

Just look at the cheesy goodness.

We asked for some aioli which also had garlic in, so we had extra garlic basically and it was good

On to our main courses.

Matty ordered the Pepperoni, fior di latte cheese, fresh basil and pepperoni £10.50, of course this pizza was demolished pretty quick.

I on the other hand went for the Mozzarella, basil, olive oil and mozzarella £9.50. Pizza's are 12 inches with a sourdough base with the Central homemade San Marzano tomato sauce and they taste pretty good!

There's something else I love about Central, Central fries.

Skinny chips with parmesan, truffle oil and rosemary. With aioli and the most delicious spicy tomato dip £3.75. I can't even begin to tell you about my love for these fries but it's pretty big.

I would recommend booking a table at Central, I did even though we were dining at 1745 but I asked our lovely waitress about getting a table as a walk in and she said that they turning people away. Granted it was Saturday night and pay weekend but still, better safe than sorry. Give them a call on 0191 349 9187.

After all the carbs I was rather full and quite strapped for time so I drank up my wine and made my way to the Theatre.

Mamma Mia was excellent, we had tickets 2 rows from the front. I'm a secret Abba fanatic (I have the CD in my car and listen to it all the time) so I was in my element and really had to concentrate on not singing along to all the songs! Mamma Mia is at the theatre till April 15th, tickets still available so still time to get your Abba thrill.

With a Newcastle win, pizza and a trip to the theatre, you pretty much have the perfect Saturday date.
